How is Solar Panel Efficiency Calculated?

Solar panel efficiency refers to the portion of sunlight hitting the physical surface of the panel that is successfully converted into usable electricity. Most modern monocrystalline residential solar panels fluctuate between 18% and 23% efficiency.

The STC Efficiency Formula

Efficiency is determined mathematically by comparing the panel's physical footprint against standardized testing conditions (1,000 Watts of solar irradiance per square meter).

  • Formula: Efficiency = [ Max Power Output (Watts) / (Area (mยฒ) ร— 1,000 W/mยฒ) ] ร— 100
  • Example: If a panel is 2 square meters in size, 1,000 W/mยฒ of sunlight means 2,000 Watts of raw solar energy are constantly hitting it. If the panel's maximum rating is 400 Watts, it is capturing 400 of those 2,000 Watts, making its efficiency exactly 20%.

Why is efficiency so low (under 30%)?
